HISTORY OF UWB

The history of our university started on September 28, 1991, when the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and the Faculty of Education (both schools with a forty-year tradition) merged to establish the University of West Bohemia.

In 1993, the Faculty of Law was added to the already existing Faculties of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Applied Sciences, Economics, and Education.  The Faculty of Humanities was launched on the tenth anniversary of UWB.  Four years later, in 2005, it was transformed into the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts.

In the year 2000, the university launched a new institute:  New Technologies - Research Centre, followed by the Institute of Art and Design four years later, and the Institute of Applied Language Studies, along with the Faculty of Health Care, in 2008.  In 2013, the Institute of Art and Design transformed into the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, thus becoming the youngest of the UWB faculties.
